Jennings Niles (“Red”) Hunley

COLUMBUS - October 4, 1930 – June 24, 2022 Jennings Niles (“Red”) Hunley died peacefully on Friday, June 24, 2022, at age 91. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Patricia, and is survived by his children, Jay (Denise), Cheryl (Ronald) Bauchmoyer, Scott (Sara), and James (Ingrid Emch); his grandchildren, Shawn, Jaime (Carlo) Spedale, Christopher Bauchmoyer, Grace, Nicholas, Ian, Erin, Kiersten, Chuck, Amber, and Jennetta; and several great-grandchildren and other extended family and friends. Red was raised in Charleston, West Virginia but spent much of his youth living on military bases with his father. At age 17 he began over twenty years of military service, primarily as a non-commissioned officer in the US Air Force, traveling to Occupied Japan and England, where he met his wife, and on to Germany and the United States. Together with his wife, they raised four children in Europe and the US, and after retiring from the military and earning a bachelor’s degree and then a master’s degree in public administration, he began a second career including positions in the US Federal Protective Service, the US General Services Administration, the Air Force Systems Command, and the Defense Logistics Agency. Red was an accomplished painter, model train hobbyist, writer, tinkerer, and a devoted husband, father, and Papa to his many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife, Red was preceded in death by his parents, Mancel Hunley and Mabel Esterly, and his sister Colleen. The family wishes to thank the Cherry Blossom Senior Living facility’s memory care and Capital City hospice professionals for their devoted care of Red over the past ten months. The family is honoring Red privately.
