Joan Ruth Curtis, 90, of Westerville, OH, passed away Tuesday, February 14, 2023 at Parkside Village
Senior Living. She was born September 2, 1932 in
Conneaut, the daughter of Levy Eddy and Jeanette
(Spicer) Cox.
Joan graduated from Rowe High School in 1950, and shortly after, married the love of her life, Stuart
L. Curtis, September 9, 1950.
She was a member of the former East Conneaut
United Methodist Church where she served as church treasurer for a time. Joan had been active with Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts when her children were young.
She enjoyed anything Real Estate and going to conventions, traveling, camping with family, dancing, going to the theatre and symphony, and watching her children and grandchildren’s sports activities including baseball, basketball, football, soccer, gymnastics, band, and cheerleading. She was involved in many book clubs and card clubs. Joan was a member of the Eastern Star, and a parent advisor for Rainbow Girls and Demola.
Joan was a former member of Beta Sigma Chi Sorority, Past-president of the Conneaut Chamber of Commerce, Women Business Owners of Ashtabula County, and Secretary of Ashtabula County Industrial Development (ACID.) She was a member of the Ashtabula County Economic Development, Conneaut Rotary Club, Ashtabula County Revitalization, and Conneaut Downtown Revitalization Committee.
A charter member of the Ashtabula County “501” Board, she was named in “Who’s Who in Women Business Management” and also “Women in Real Estate.” Joan was Past Matron of Rose Chapter with her husband Stuart as the Worthy Patron for the 75th anniversary year of the chapter.
Joan became the first female broker and multi-office brokerage in Ashtabula County. She opened her Real Estate Brokerage in 1976 in Conneaut and a second office in Ashtabula in 1978 and became a member of the Ashtabula Board of Realtors. She was also a member of the National Association of Realtors, Ohio Association of Realtors, Past President of the Ashtabula Board of Realtors, the Ohio Certified Real Estate Brokerage Manager Chapter, and the Co-chair of the first Appraisal Committee organized for AOR. She was named “Broker of the Year” in 1980 and again in 1992 by the Ashtabula County Board of Realtors and had been Legislative Chairperson for 14 years. She was also a licensed Real Estate Appraiser, a Master Senior Appraiser and a Appraisal Review member. Joan taught Real Estate/continuing Ed Classes at Kent State, Ashtabula Branch.
After having sold her Brokerage, she moved to Lewis Center, OH. She joined the Church of the Messiah United Methodist Church, She was a former Director of the Westerville Senior Center and the Women’s League of the Westerville Symphony League of which she is a Past President.
Survivors include her children Greig Curtis, Bonnie (Robyn Cooke) Harris, Jill Rudler, Sarah Beall, and Jack (Linda) Curtis; grandchildren Mark (Heather) Curtis, Annie (Tyson) Gotte, Elliot Harris, Andrew Beall, Ryan (Kayla Troyer) Curtis, and Ashley Curtis, great-grandchildren Hope Curtis, Taylor Froelicher, Morgan (Caitlin) Moon, Olivia Gotte, Aaron Gotte, Jordan Harris, Aiden Harris, and Jacob Harris; and great-great-grandchildren Heidi Cashi, Amelia Froelicher, Chance Wyatt, and Haylee Douglas; and her life partner since 2006 Larry Singer. She is also survived by her half-brother Robert Eddy, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years Stuart Curtis; parents; stepfather; stepmother; maternal and paternal grandparents; half-brother Larry Eddy; aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be 11:00 AM, Thursday, February 23, 2023, at the Marcy Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 208 Liberty St. Conneaut, with Rev. Russ Ham of New Leaf United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will take place on Friday at Greenlawn Memory Gardens, North Kingsville, OH.
Visitation will be 2:00-4:00 PM and 6:00-8:00 PM, Wednesday, February 22, 2023, and also from 10:00 AM until the time of the service at 11:00 AM on Thursday at the funeral home.
