Thelma “Tammie” Golden

-

COLUMBUS - Thelma “Tammie” Golden, nee Garfield, daughter of the late Louis and Ethel Garfield, adored wife for almost 72 years of Richard (Dick) Golden, beloved mother of Betty (Tripp) Hainsfurther and Marcie Golden (Rabbi Howard Apothaker). She was the treasured “Grammie” of Sara Hainsfurther, Adam Hainsfurther, Elianna Apothaker (Christopher Sheldon-dante), and Leah Apothaker (Jordan Byrd), as well as a beloved aunt, cousin, and friend. Tammie graduated from The Ohio State University, first in 1952 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and again in 1966 with a Master’s Degree as a reading specialist. Tammie taught for 25 years, first in Columbus, and then in Bexley. Tammie loved activities that “made you think.” She was always up for a learning challenge; perhaps the biggest one was becoming an adult bat mitzvah at the age of 58. Tammie enjoyed traveling with the family-whether by car, plane, or ship. She, Dick, and the girls traversed the United States and eastern Canada, and were able to visit all 50 states. After retiring as classroom teachers, Dick and Tammie continued to travel the world, visiting 20 countries on 4 continents. Retirement also allowed Tammie to enjoy her passion for gardening. She had a green thumb and loved teaching her grandchildren about nature. Ever the educator, she served as a docent at the Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus and at the Conservancy in Naples, FL. Tammie will be missed by all whose lives she touched. The family is especially grateful to her caregiver, Laura, and all the staff at Kensington Place.
