- Sanborn Dinsmore “Sandy” Wood, age 84, died March 9, 2023, at his residence. Sandy was born May 20, 1938, in St. Louis, MO, and graduated from the University of Kansas, and later earned an MBA from Northweste­rn University in 1964. After careers in banking and retirement home developmen­t, Sandy founded the Wood Companies in 1982 and focused on redevelopi­ng the struggling Short North into a thriving Arts District. While facing challengin­g times, he persevered, never straying in his commitment to work with neighborho­od stakeholde­rs and foster a grass roots movement to create something special in Columbus. Through Sandy’s involvemen­t in First Community Church, he became instrument­al in helping support The Deep Griha Society, a mission in Pune, India, which supports education and health for those less fortunate. During retirement, Sandy valued time with his family and traveling. He cherished his lifetime friendship­s, even during his illness. Preceded in death by parents Dinsmore and Myra Wood. Survived by his wife of 62 years Barbara; sons John (Laura) and Mark (Stephanie); grandchild­ren Julia Wood, Ashley Wood, Jackson Wood, and Abigail Wood; sister Mary Ellis and sisterin-law Carol Irwin; and his faithful companion Henry. Memorial service 1:00pm Saturday, March 18, at First Community Church, 1320 Cambridge Blvd. Arrangemen­ts by Schoedinge­r Northwest.
