Westerville schools head is set to depart at end of year

- Dean Narciso

Westerville Superintendent John Kellogg has announced his departure at the end of the school year for a leadership position with the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio at Columbus State Community College.

Kellogg, 60, has led the school district for the past decade, through an operating levy and bond issue in 2016 and 2017, respectively.

But Kellogg told The Dispatch on Tuesday that he believes his biggest accomplishment has been maintaining the district as a premier destination for families, “to continue to build on the history of success.”

Kellogg and his wife, who have two grown children, will continue to live in Westerville where, as an endurance runner, he is often seen.

He puts in about 50 to 60 miles per week, he said.

Kellogg sent letters announcing his departure to faculty, staff and parents. In his new post as superintendent in residence at the Educational Service Center of Central Ohio at Columbus State Community College, he will focus on regional collaboration for students to succeed in various careers.

Kellogg told The Dispatch that he was aware of the service center’s efforts to fill the position earlier this year, “So I inquired about it and the timing was right.”

The Westerville Board of Education accepted his resignation Monday night, and will begin a search for a new superintendent.

In his letter to the community, Kellogg said: “We have accomplished much together and have overcome many challenges over the last 10 years, including navigating a worldwide pandemic. Given the staff we have in place, I know the district remains in good hands.” dnarciso@dispatch.com @Deannarciso
