Columbus named ‘hidden gem’ for springtime trip

- Belinda M. Paschal Columbus Dispatch USA TODAY NETWORK

When it comes to domestic travel in the spring, many people think of tropical paradises ending in “Beach”: Miami, Daytona and Myrtle.

But Forbes recommends a more unlikely destination: Columbus, Ohio.

Calling the country’s 14th largest city “a hidden gem in plain sight,” Forbes found Columbus’ thriving arts district, its myriad restaurants offering global cuisine, and other offerings make the city ideal for a springtime visit.

Here are some of their suggestions for things to do while visiting Columbus (or if you live here.)

Food and drink

Among Forbes’ must-try eateries is a pair of restaurants run by chef and Columbus native Avishar Barua, who also was a 2021 contestant on “Top Chef.” Joya’s Cafe, an Old Worthington restaurant named after Barua’s mother, and the fledgling Agni in the Brewery District both received high marks, as did two newcomers to the Hilton Columbus Downtown tower, FYR and Stories on High.

Also making Forbes’ list: Chapman’s Eat Market, Understory, Ginger Rabbit, Parable Coffee, Lox Bagel Shop and Brassica, as well as Momo Ghar and Hoyo’s Kitchen in North Market Downtown.

What to do

If you’re seeking a taste of culture, Forbes urges visitors to check out the Columbus Museum of Art with its many exhibits; the Wexner Center for the Arts (fondly known as “The Wex); the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library & Museum, which houses the world’s largest collection of cartoon and comic art; Columbus College of Art & Design’s Beeler Gallery; the Franklinton Arts District; 400 West Rich; Chromedge Studios; and Good Land, which sells goods made from sustainable materials.

For those who prefer outdoor scenery, Forbes touted Franklin Park Conservatory and Botanical Garden’s Chiluly glass sculptures and meticulously landscaped gardens, and for fashionistas, Common Thread, a new Downtown strip of locally owned boutiques.

Where to stay

Le Méridien Columbus, The Joseph in the Short North along with its inhouse restaurant, The Guild House, topped Forbes’ list for luxury lodging and the hotel’s Spa Suites were called the city’s “best-kept secret” for travelers looking to unwind with a massage in their own private mini-spa, followed by a relaxing dip in a spacious soaking tub.
