James Christian Kloss

-

ARDENTOWN James Christian Kloss, born January 8, 1956 in Columbus, OH to Donald A. & Meredith Beck Kloss, died May 6, 2023 with his wife and co-adventurer, Esther, by his side. After graduating from Eastmoor High and Bowling Green State U., Jim worked as a geologist, computer programmer, and software entrepreneur. In his 30s, inspired by many happy summers spent at his family’s Black Lake, MI cabin, he left the corporate world to live a simpler life connected to nature. He thru-hiked the 2200mile Appalachian Trail, cycled across the U.S., and lived self-sufficiently in the woods of Maine and Alaska. In the rural town of Talkeetna, AK, Jim created Whole Wheat Radio, an innovative webcast featuring independent music and his own live comedic commentaries, attracting an international audience. He expanded his efforts to help musicians and locals by renovating an old log saloon to provide a warm space for concerts, arts, and community events. Later passions included his beloved dog Beta, delving into classical music, fine wine, economics, Toastmasters, helping dogs find homes, roasting coffee, and growing Venus flytraps - bringing excellence to every endeavor. Jim was a true Renaissance man: an insatiably curious, kind, mischievous, brilliant, hard-working, generous soul who was a champion for the underdog. He is survived by wife, Esther Golton; sisters, Cynthia (John) Lytle & Suzanne Kloss; nieces, Liz & Ruby Lytle; nephews, Peter (Theresa), Art & Will Lytle. In lieu of flowers, plant some! Or please consider helping dogs (foster, adopt, volunteer, donate) or helping students of all backgrounds afford educational opportunities. A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, July 2, 1PM, Grange Audubon Center, 505 W. Whittier, Cols., OH.
