COLUMBUS - Roscoe, Joan Elaine (Gibboney), of Columbus, passed peacefully, surrounded by family on May 4, 2023. Born in Columbus on January 30, 1949 to Paul and Rosemary Gibboney, she grew up on the east side with her siblings, Carol (Dave Koker), Paul (Karen), Mary (Steve Landes), Mike, and Tom. She attended Christ the King Elementary and Bishop Hartley High School, where she was a proud member of the Hi-steps drill team. Knowing Stephen, her husband of 53 years, from around the neighborhood, it took a chance run-in at Barrodi’s Luncheonette and an unexpected ride to class (in lieu of public transit), before they would start dating.

After marrying, November 26, 1969, the couple would routinely eat late night Rubino’s pizza off the ironing board while Steve finished building their first house on 60 acres near Baltimore, OH. In this rural home, she survived the Great Blizzard of ‘78, spent countless hours helping her oldest, Brian (Dawn), write the best school reports in the history of school reports at the kitchen table, read countless stories with her middle child, Chris (Jaclyn), and spoiled her baby girl, Stephanie, with shopping trips for the finest dresses she could afford.

Joan was proud to have been able to send her children to St. Pius X and onto St. Charles Preparatory and Bishop Hartley and to see her grandchildren attend St. Catharine (Allison), St. Charles (Nolan), and Olentangy Berlin (Madelyn). She was an avid supporter of all of her children and grandchildren’s academic and athletic activities (both as kids and adults) and was often found at a ballfield or gym!

Joan and Steve cruised around in their ‘40 Ford Coupe spending many weekends with their lifelong friends (Al/billie and Bill/pat) enjoying car shows in Columbus, Louisville, Vegas, and Syracuse.

She enjoyed her sweets; Necco Wafers, DOTS, and dark chocolate buttercreams were her favorites. She loved family dinners at the Olive Garden, El Toro, and Fazoli’s with Allison.

Joan was the OG couponer, before extreme couponing was cool! Driving her yellow Sunbird from store to store, listening to Charlie Pride and Reba, she was thrilled to find a “too good to pass up” deal and often generously gifted the treasures away. Joan was always thinking of others and truly valued her family and close friends (Jack/connie and Mitch)!

She worked at the IGA and the Lennox Inn, owned a body shop with Steve, and retired from the US Postal Service where she continued to attend events with her fellow retirees and good friends (Sam/julia).

Special thanks to the ICU staff at Grant Hospital, who provided great care and comfort in her final days.

In lieu of flowers, please donate or volunteer at the Cancer Thrift Shop (Reynoldsburg), a place where Joan found encouragement and cherished friendships (Sue) during her recent volunteerism.

A Celebration of Life is planned for Monday, June 5 at St. Catharine Catholic Church (Parish Hall) Columbus from 4p - 6p.
