COLUMBUS - Carolyn Schlieper Mcconnaughey, beloved wife, mother, and “Meme”, passed peacefully on March 28, 2024. She was born on October 31, 1928 in Cincinnati, Ohio. She grew up in Cincinnati and graduated from Western Hills High School in 1946. Her H.S. Yearbook described her as “Lovely to look at—delightful to know—sunny serenity”. She attended Western College for Women in Oxford, Ohio, from 1946-1948. In the fall of 1948, she transferred to The Ohio State University where she graduated in 1951 with a degree from the College of Home Economics. In the summer of 1950, Carolyn met her future husband, George C. Mcconnaughey, Jr., on a blind date. George fell in love the moment Carolyn walked down the sorority staircase to greet him wearing a beautiful, green dress she had sewn herself. They were married on June 16, 1951, at St. John’s Evangelical Church, in Cincinnati. They had nearly 73 wonderful years together. She is survived by George; and three daughters, Betsy Owen (Mark), Susie Mccamy of Knoxville, TN, and Nancy Leggett (David); seven grandchildren, Katie Wenigmann (Mike), Lisa Kelso (Tim), Christine Stotts (Kevin) Spike Mccamy (Monica), Laura Bahnson (Emmett), Callie Jubran (Nadim), and Danny Leggett (Kelly); six great-grandchildren with two more arriving soon, and special cousins, Carole Lemen and Marge Howes. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest A. and Minnie Schlieper; in-laws, George C. and Nelle Mcconnaughey, Sr.; brother-in-law, David Mcconnaughey; son-in-law, Sam Mccamy; step-mother-in-law, Charlotte Mcconnaughey; and step-sister-in-law, Paula White. Carolyn’s joys in life were little children, dachshunds, cats, and always being surrounded by flowers – she grew up amongst carnations, mums, and gladiolus in her parents’ greenhouse business. She was a dedicated member of Covenant Presbyterian Church, serving as deacon and directing the Sunday School Church Nursery for over twenty five years. She was a Girl Scout Leader for six years and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority, P.E.O. Sisterhood and Childhood League. She spent many days advocating for children with special needs which resulted in developing special education programs for the Upper Arlington School System. In addition, Carolyn volunteered for the historic Women’s Health Initiative Study at OSU. Carolyn was known as the “Cookie Lady”/”candy Lady”. She loved supplying Tremont Goodie Shop Smiley Face Cookies and Candy to all of our friends and neighborhood children. The family is thankful for the tender-loving car given to Carolyn (and George) by the caregivers at First Community Village and the Hospice Program. Memorial Service will be Saturday, April 20 at 1:30 p.m. with visitation starting at 1:00 p.m. at Covenant Presbyterian Church, 2070 Ridgecliff Rd., Columbus, OH 43221.
