Susan Nelson Metz Carter, of Worthingto­n, OH, died on Thursday April 4, 2024, in the hospice at Kobacker House. She was 60 years old. Susan was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997. In 2014 she was diagnosed with a stage 4 recurrence that she faced with courage and dignity for almost 10 years. Throughout her experience, she was supported and sustained by loving family and lifelong friends. Susan was born on May 18, 1963 in Durham, NC, to Earl Nelson Metz and Mary Alice Fritz Metz. She is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her devoted spouse Eric James Carter, children Harry Alexander Carter and Jane Mary Carter, and brothers Douglas Owen Metz, Thomas William Metz, and John Frederick Metz. Susan graduated from Worthingto­n High School (1981) and Ohio State University (1986), where she received a Bachelor of Science degree from the College of Human Ecology. She pursued a career in retail, working her way up from Store Manager to Area Sales Manager, to Program Director, in both Columbus and San Diego. With the arrival of her son and daughter, she returned to Worthingto­n and worked as an office assistant at Evening Street Elementary School and as an Executive Assistant at the Columbus Financial Group and at Cardinal Family Eye Care. A lifelong runner, Susan earned a varsity letter in Track and Field as a freshman at Worthingto­n High School. She continued running as an adult, with Marathoner­s in Training and as an annual participan­t in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. Susan was an active and energetic member of the community, serving as a school volunteer, soccer coach, and Team Captain for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Walk for the Cure. In these pursuits, she developed precious long-term friendship­s that held steadfast through long illness until her final days. Susan was a long-time member of Worthingto­n Presbyteri­an Church, where she and Eric raised their children. There will be a private family service. Persons wishing to remember Susan may consider a donation to the “Stefanie Spielman Fund for Breast Cancer Research” at The Ohio State University Comprehens­ive Cancer Center - James Cancer Hospital and Solove Research Institute, where Susan received superb care for many years.
