Behind on filing taxes? Here’s how to get an extension

- Mariyam Muhammad

As tax filing season comes to an end on Monday, you may find yourself scrambling to get your tax return completed.

But don’t worry. You might be allowed another six months to complete your taxes by the IRS.

All you have to do is complete a form to get a grace period extending to October.

How to file a tax deadline extension with the IRS to get an extra six months to finish your taxes

Are you in a pinch and need more time to submit your taxes? If yes, the IRS luckily makes it easy.

All it takes is E-filing an extension form on the IRS website.

Individual tax filers, regardless of income, can use IRS Free File to electronically request an automatic filing extension, according to their website. Extension forms can be found here.

To receive an extension, taxpayers must estimate their tax liability on the extension form and pay any amount due.

However, the IRS will only grant you an extension just for filing. It does not exempt you from:

● An extension of time to pay your taxes

● Owed taxes. They should be paid by their regular deadline to avoid possible penalties

An extension can be given in another way.

Taxpayers can also get an extension by electronically paying all or part of their estimated income tax due and indicating the payment is for an extension. If extension is selected when making a payment, taxpayers won’t have to file a separate extension form and they’ll receive a confirmation number for their records.

Extension forms must be completed by April 15. With the extension, taxpayers will have until October 15 to file their taxes.

If a taxpayer live in a disaster area, they may not need to submit an extension form, depending on if they qualify.
