COLUMBUS - David William Simmons, 65, of Columbus, Ohio, passed away on May 8 at The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital.

Born in Coshocton, Ohio, on November 17, 1958, David led a life of helping others. He was a counselor at the Godman Guild, which provides programs and services for youth and adults to increase their social and economic mobility. David also worked at Friends of the Homeless Inc.

One of David’s passions was his devotion to his Catholic faith and he was an altar server at Saint Joseph Cathedral where he was a parishioner for many years. He also had a love for animals, as he adopted older dogs and gave them a new “leash” on life. David, who entertained his family and friends with his wry sense of humor, loved eating out and never missed a dessert.

David completed his undergraduate studies at Kent State University and earned his masters degree in Theological Studies from Southern Methodist University.

He was the son of the late Becky and Kermit Simmons. In addition to his parents, David is preceded in death by a sister, Carolyn Kumler; cousin, Greg Mccabe; and uncles Bill Simmons and Phil Mccabe. He is survived by his sister Cathy Bennett; his aunts Wilma Mccabe and Linda Osborne; his cousins Bill, John and Susan Simmons, and Dan and Doug Mccabe; his nephews Jacob Kumler and Charles Bennett; and his nieces Emily Kumler and Christi Herrera.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Wednesday, May 15, at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Cathedral.

David’s family would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff at The James for the exceptional care David received while he was a patient. In addition, his family would like to thank David’s friends for their love, time and kindness.

In lieu of flowers, friends may make donations to The Arthur G. James Cancer Hospital.
