COLUMBUS - Frederic Stevens Sater passed away peacefully in Columbus, Ohio, on May 17th, 2024. He was born on August 1st, 1934, the son of the late Velma Stevens Sater and Richard Francis Sater. He is survived by his sons Stefan F. (Corinne) Sater and Anders F. Sater; and grandchild Raphael L. Sater.

Having attended Columbus Academy, Frederic graduated from Phillips Exeter Academy, class of 1952 and Princeton University, class of 1956. He was awarded his MBA degree from Columbia University in 1960. From 1956 to 1958 Frederic served in the US Navy, being released as a Lieutenant Junior Grade after tours of duty on the USS JC Owens.

Frederic’s entire banking career was with JP Morgan, starting with internatio­nal lending activities in London. He managed relations with world Central Banks, traveling to over 50 countries, working from JP Morgan’s headquarte­rs on Wall Street.

Frederic was married to Eva (Plonaitis) for ten years, Maria (Carmen) for ten years and Susan (Smith) for seven years. The marriages ended in divorce.

Frederic enjoyed jazz, and became a good friend of the trumpet legend Doc Cheatham. He was an avid photograph­er of jazz events in NYC, New Orleans and in Italy, where he rebuilt a farmhouse in Umbria. He held press passes to key events in the NY jazz calendar, supporting the Jazz Foundation of America. He enjoyed many seasons at The Metropolit­an Opera.

Frederic was fond of bird watching, be it in Central Park, in his summer house in Center Lovell, Maine, or in Umbria. He played tennis, scuba-dived, skied and loved sailing, crossing the Atlantic by sail in 1987.

Frederic was a member of the Brick Presbyteri­an Church in NYC for 36 years, ushering as of 2003. He assisted E. Deane Turner in preparing the publishing of a 300-year history of the Brick Church, a project completed over a period of nine years. Frederic attended the Broad Street Presbyteri­an Church upon his return to Columbus, Ohio as of 2021.

A memorial service will be held at the Broad Street Presbyteri­an Church, 760 East Broad Street, Columbus, Ohio on June 7th, 2024 at 11 am. A private family burial at Green Lawn Cemetery will be held prior to the memorial. Friends may, if they wish, in lieu of flowers, contribute to the Jazz Foundation of America, the Greater Lovell Land Trust or the Broad Street Presbyteri­an Church, Columbus.
