Religious rift: The female branch of the scandal-plagued Legionarie­s of Christ religious order was in turmoil Tuesday after its leader resigned and some 30 members decided to split from the movement. Malen Oriol said in a letter Sunday that she had asked to resign as assistant to the general director of the Legion, which Pope Benedict XVI took over in 2010 after the order revealed its late founder had sexually molested seminarian­s and fathered three children.

Smoothie sentencing: Selena Irene York, 34, of Vernal, Utah, was ordered to serve three consecutiv­e terms of up to five years each for spiking a 79-year-old man’s peach smoothie with antifreeze after taking control of his bank accounts. Ed Zurbuchen was hospitaliz­ed for four days in 2008 and is still undergoing liver and kidney testing.

Wrong message: The school at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida where bomb technician­s from all branches of the U.S. military learn their craft has been ordered to remove the unofficial motto “Initial Success or Total Failure” from its classroom walls. Navy leaders told the school that the motto could be viewed as disrespect­ful to the hundreds of Explosive Ordnance Disposal technician­s who have died in the line of duty.

Out of smarts: A fugitive is back in jail after he ran out of gas in Wyoming and called the local sheriff for roadside help. The Wyoming Highway Patrol said Tuesday that Richard Vincent, 59, of Prineville, Ore., was wanted in Georgia for violating parole on a murder and escape conviction.
