High-schoolers receive tips at ACT workshop

Alpha Eta ZETA-DOVE members share strategies for maximizing scores

- By Jamie Dunlap

On Jan. 28, the Alpha Eta ZETA-DOVE Foundation sponsored the second annual ACT workshop for high school students at Lemoyne -Owen College.

More than 60 students from across the city gathered at the college to learn test-taking strategies and to receive helpful tips for scoring well in English, math and science on the ACT exam. Some of the students were preparing to take the test for the first time, and others sought tips to help them boost their scores.

The day began at 8:30 a.m. with refreshments and the first session of English. Students took a break for lunch and attended the last two sessions, which ended at 2 p.m.

The many parents and relatives of students lining the bottom hallway of the building Saturday morning were glad that they were able to reserve a spot for their students in the free workshop. Not only did parents and students see the value of taking the ACT, but Alpha Eta ZetaDOVE Foundation also noticed a need in the community. College entrance exams like the ACT are a requirement for high school graduation. Additionally, college acceptance and scholarship money is influenced by good test scores.

This free workshop was sponsored by the Alpha Eta Zeta Dove-foundation, the scholastic arm of Alpha Eta Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc. The Dove-foundation is Dedicated to Opportunities of Volunteerism and Education.

Jamie Dunlap is publicity chairwoman for the local chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority Inc.
