Jeter’s learning recipe

-

AS LOCAL SCHOOLS officials continue to push forward to complete an education reform cookbook, they need to make sure that E. E. Jeter Elementary School’s recipe is one of the chapters.

Jeter, on the eastern edge of Meeman-shelby Forest, has earned straight A’s on the state report card for 10 years. Last year’s math scores were among the highest in the state. It is one of six schools in Tennessee nominated for the U.S. Department of Education’s 2012 National Blue Ribbon Schools designation.

The school has climbed these academic ladders despite having more than half its student body qualifying for free or reduced-price lunches, which is a measure of poverty in schools.

Jeter’s success should not be taken as proof of the idea that poverty is not an impediment to learning. What’s happening there is evidence, however, that kids from financially challenged families can soar academically with intense support and guidance.

Jeter is an example of how innovation by school staff can positively impact students and encourage parent participation in their children’s learning.

The continuous success of principal Paulette Bond and her staff shows there are a variety of recipes that can be used to cook up academic success for students.
