Four charged with smuggling of cellphones
A day after a report released by Shelby County Corrections Center Director James Coleman called for stricter measures to keep contraband out of the penal facility, four inmates were charged with sneaking cellphones into the prison.
Police reported that inmate Tony Campbell, 45, slipped a cellphone into the prison in February by concealing it in a tote box containing his clothing and mail.
And in March, at least three inmates were found in possession of cellphones at the facility.
Inmates Lloyd Jones, 49, and Rodricus Dorsey, 24, were found with cellphones during strip searches by correctional officers.
Inmate Sean Blackmon, 28, removed a cellphone from his pants and threw it on the ground before such a search. Each of the phones was confiscated.
Each of the men was charged Saturday with taking contraband into a penal facility.
Coleman’s call to action was spurred by 29-year- old inmate Martez D. Wright, who in April used a cellphone to post several videos on Facebook of himself and other prisoners claiming to have marijuana, flashing gang signs and boasting about stockpiles of toiletries and junk food.
Similar charges against Wright have not been filed.
