Rookie Kelly helps Cards by D-backs

ST. LOUIS — Rookie Joe Kelly pitched into the seventh inning of what could be his final start before Jaime Garcia comes off the disabled list, and the St. Louis Cardinals got home runs from Matt Holliday and Jon Jay in an 8-2 victory over the Arizona Diamondbac­ks on Tuesday night.

Miguel Montero hit a two-run homer for the Diamondbac­ks, who have lost four of six and are 0-4 against St. Louis this season.

Ian Kennedy (10-10) made throwing errors on consecutiv­e plays to help the Cardinals score two unearned runs in the seventh for a three-run cushion.

Kelly (3-5) gave up two runs in 6¥ innings and had six strikeouts, lowering his ERA to 3.41, second to Kyle Lohse’s 2.72 in the Cards’ rotation.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Reds 3, Mets 0 at Cincinnati: Jay Bruce hit a three-run homer, his 23rd of the season, in the ninth inning and Cincinnati won its fourth straight.

Dodgers 11, Pirates 0 at Pittsburgh: Chad Billingsle­y (9-9) pitched eight dominant innings and Los Angeles, led by a careerbest three-run, three-RBI night from Luis Cruz, handed Pittsburgh its fifth loss in six starts.

Braves 6, Padres 0 at Atlanta: Tim Hudson (12-4) combined with three relievers for a five-hit shutout and Martin Prado and former Memphis Tiger Dan Uggla homered for Atlanta.

Phillies 1, Marlins 0 at Miami: Kyle Kendrick (59) pitched five-hit ball for seven innings and Jimmy Rollins led off the game with a home run off Josh Johnson as Philadelph­ia gave manager Charlie Manuel his 700th career victory.

Rockies 8, Brewers 6 at Denver: Carlos Gonzalez had four hits, Eric Young Jr. added three, including a homer, and Colorado got 15 hits off Milwaukee for the second straight night.

Astros 10, Cubs 1 at Chicago: Former Redbird Brett Wallace and Fer- nando Martinez each hit three-run homers to back eight strong innings by Lucas Harrell (10-8) for Houston.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Yankees 3, Rangers 0 at New York: Hiroki Kuroda pitched a two-hitter and New York got consecutiv­e homers from Nick Swisher and Mark Teixeira for its sixth win in seven games.

White Sox 3, Blue Jays 2 at Toronto: Jose Quintana (5-2) snapped a five-start winless streak and Chicago won for just the fourth time at Rogers Centre since 2007.

Tigers 8, Twins 4 at Minneapoli­s: Miguel Cabrera became the first 100 RBI player in the majors and Doug Fister (7-7) pitched eight innings as Detroit topped Minnesota, led by Josh Willingham’s careerhigh 30th homer.

Orioles 7, Red Sox 1 at Baltimore: Mark Reynolds homered twice and drove in four runs, and Omar Quintanill­a also went deep for Baltimore to back WeiYin Chen (11-7).

Royals 5, Athletics 0 at Kansas City, Mo.: Recently-acquired Jeremy Guthrie allowed only three singles in seven innings for his second win with Kasnas City.

Meeting over Valentine? Boston manager Bobby Valentine expressed surprise over a report by Yahoo Sports that several Red Sox players met with owner John Henry and president Larry Lucchino last month to complain about the manager. The story said Adrian Gonzalez and Dustin Pedroia were “the most vocal.”

Valentine said, “I’m glad July is over because they are still playing for me.” Pedroia and Gonzalez refused comment.

Briefly: New York Yankees pitcher Andy Pettitte says recent X-rays on his broken leg look better, but is not sure when he might be cleared to throw. ...
