Champions fill TD Club schedule

Saban, Fulmer, Stallings, Reeves top 2012 speakers list

- By Ron Higgins

A mix of current college head football coaches, including Nick Saban of reigning national champion Alabama, and former national championship coaches Phillip Fulmer and Gene Stallings, highlight the guest-speaker list for this fall’s Touchdown Club of Memphis meetings.

Most meetings will be held Monday nights at Chickasaw Country Club. The Oct. 8 event featuring new University of Memphis coach Justin Fuente and athletic director Tom Bowen will take place at the Murphy Center on the U of M campus. The Thursday Dec. 6 affair featuring the coaches in this season’s AutoZone Liberty Bowl, and Saban’s appearance Dec. 10 will be held at The Racquet Club.

Membership cost, which includes a sit-down dinner, is $325 if paid by Thursday, $350 afterward. Guest fees are $50 per meeting.

“We feel this is one of the best speaking lineups we’ve ever had,” club spokesman Bill Harper said. “We have coaches who have won national championships, a coach who has participated in more Super Bowls as a player, assistant coach and head coach than anyone in football history, the coach of last year’s Liberty Bowl winning team and three first-year head coaches.” The list of speakers: August — 20: Tony Barnhart, CBS Sports; 27: Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze.

September — 17: Cincinnati coach Butch Jones; 24: Dan Mullen, Mississippi State coach.

October — 8: Memphis coach Justin Fuente and athletic director Tom Bowen; 15: Arkansas State coach Gus Malzahn; 22: former Tennessee coach Phillip Fulmer; 29: Dan Reeves, former NFL coach for the Broncos, Giants and Falcons.

November — 5: former Alabama/ Texas A & M coach Gene Stallings; 26: Chad Simmons of Scout. com, Rusty Mansell, 247. com, recruiting.

December — 6: AutoZone Liberty Bowl night; 10: Alabama coach Nick Saban.
