Man kills teen burglary suspect

A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed during a suspected home burglary Friday morning in Hickory Hill.
Police responded shortly after 11 a.m. to a home in the 4900 block of Copper Valley, near Kirby Parkway, where they found the boy, Teryan Reed, who had been shot. He was taken in critical condition to the Regional Medical Center at Memphis, where he later died.
Police said the homeowner was inside his residence when three males — Cory Buford, 20, Reed and a 14-year-old — forced their way inside, and one was shot. Officers later arrested the other suspects.
Shaun McGowan, a neighbor, said there have been multiple residential burglaries on Copper Valley, causing some homeowners to leave.
“My neighbor just left his house after they broke in twice,” he said. “It doesn’t make any sense.”
According to police incident reports, Friday’s attempted burglary is the eighth burglary on Copper Valley this year.
“It makes me very concerned,” he said. “I have two daughters. I don’t let them go outside by themselves because these boys around here don’t have any respect for people.”
Nedra House, another neighbor, said she believes the burglars live among them.
“They went in one of the houses and got a boy out,” she said. “He had gone in the house and changed clothes. These boys are always out here watching (to see when people are leaving their homes).
McGowan said the homeowner told him he felt bad after shooting the juvenile. He said the incident may serve as a deterrent.
“Maybe they’ll stop and think now,” McGowan said. Police said there is an ongoing investigation.
