Riverkings fall at home to Surge

Jeff Grant of the Mississipp­i Surge scored the winning goal in a 4-3 Southern Profession­al Hockey League victory over the Mississipp­i RiverKings on Friday night at the Landers Center in Southaven. Darrell Stoddard scored a goal and Nick Walsh scored twice for the ’Kings (4-3-1).

AUTO RACING

■ James Buescher won NASCAR’s Truck Series championsh­ip in the season finale Friday night. Cale Gale won the 200-mile race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, but Buescher finished 13th and captured the points title.

PREPS

■ Derrick Henry broke Ken Hall’s career high-school rushing record Friday night. Hall ran for 11,232 yards in four years (1950-53) at Sugar Land (Texas). Henry, a standout at Yulee (Fla.) High who has committed to Alabama, topped Hall’s record on a 52-yard touchdown run against Taylor County in a Class 4A state playoff game.

COLLEGES

■ The U of M signed Waukesha, Wis., native Leighann Cabush to a national letter of intent to play golf next season. ... Christian Brothers University (19-11) reached the semifinals of the Gulf South volleyball tournament for the first time Friday night with a 3-0 win over West Alabama at Pensacola, Fla. ... The NCAA has ruled UCLA freshman guard Shabazz Muhammad eligible to play, saying that sitting out the season’s three games is penalty enough. ... Saint Louis men’s basketball coach Rick Majerus will not return to the team because of a serious heart condition. Jim Crews is the Billikens’ interim coach.

GOLF

■ Ai Miyazato of Japan shot an 8-under 64 on Friday for a one-shot lead at 10-under 134 at the LPGA Titleholde­rs tournament in Naples, Fla. ... Russ Cochran shot a 7-under 65 at Del Monte for a share of the Pebble Beach (Calif.) Invitation­al lead with fellow Champions Tour player Kirk Triplett at 9-under 135 in the tournament that features 81 players from the PGA, LPGA, Champions and Web.com tours.

TENNIS

■ Tomas Berdych beat Nicolas Almagro 6-3, 3- 6, 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3 to give the Czech Republic a 1-1 tie with Spain after the opening singles matches Friday in the Davis Cup final at Prague. Earlier, Spain’s David Ferrer took a 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 victory over Radek Stepanek.
