Lambs teach lesson for Briarcrest students

- By Beth Rooks

Sixth-grade art students at Briarcrest Christian School, under the direction of art teacher Melody Weintraub, recently designed, created and donated life-size papier-mâché lambs to the Child Evangelism Fellowship Banquet on Oct. 25 at Colonial Park United Methodist Church.

Weintraub introduced the lesson by assigning each team of two students with the task of finding a Bible verse that referenced lambs or sheep. The students drew a lamb depicting that verse.

Students created a base for the papier-mâché using balloons for the body and head and paper rolls for the legs. This base was then covered with two or three layers of papier-mâché before painting it. The “wool” texture was added using recycled shredded paper. Each lamb took about three weeks to complete.

In this lesson, students learned the value of teamwork, the effectiveness of using art to communicate a message and problemsolving skills. Since this lesson had a servicelearning/success- driven directive, students were motivated to finish.

The 20 lambs were displayed beautifully at the dinner and the sixth-grade artists were acknowledged by the speaker and in the program.

The lambs were sold at the end of the dinner in a silent auction. Hundreds of dollars were donated to the children’s ministry as a result. Beth Rooks is director of communications for Briarcrest.
