CBHS announces students in Class of 2016 honors program

- By John Morris

Christian Brothers High School is proud to announce the De La Salle Scholars cohort for the Class of 2016. The CBHS honors program is named for the founder of the Roman Catholic religious congregation of the Christian Brothers, St. John Baptist de La Salle, who knew that his mission — the temporal and eternal salvation of boys — could not be realized without lofty standards of excellence and a community of mutual support. To those ends, the program gathers a community of the most gifted and dedicated students with the purpose of holding each other to the highest standards of academic achievement, leadership and service. CBHS believes that intelligence is a gift and carries a sacred responsibility.

The program fosters an encouraging atmosphere and a culture of competing with, rather than against, each other for admission into the finest schools in the country. The 25 honors students in the Class of 2012 attained an average ACT score of 32 and included six National Merit finalists. Currently, 10 former CBHS honors students are enrolled in one of the United States Military Academies. In addition, Brothers’ Boys are now enrolled at Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern University, Georgetown University, Notre Dame University, Vanderbilt University, University of Virginia, Southern California University and many more.

To date there are 87 De La Salle scholars with 42 freshmen, 23 sophomores, and 22 juniors out of the 850 boys in the overall student body.

Boys in the program are challenged to realize outstanding growth, pushing their goals beyond their own expectations. Freshman scholars are enrolled in AP or Honors World History, Honors Geometry, Honors Biology and Honors English I.

Austin Taylor of Memphis acknowledges the demands of the curriculum: “I have worked the hardest I ever had at CBHS — and I love it!”

Additional programming includes monthly cohort meetings, regular faculty advising sessions, PSAT/ACT/SAT prep sessions, and annual college road trips to visit highly selective schools.

Being a De La Salle Scholar heightens the spirit of brotherhood and academic excellence that is so unique to the Christian Brothers High School experience. Junior Michael Gattas explains, “We push each other to become stronger academically, spiritually and emotionally, and the support within the group is unlike any high school in the city. We know that our talents are worth nothing unless we use them to serve others, and nowhere else is De La Salle’s mission of fraternity exhibited so intensely.”
