Desoto will miss energetic Bowden
Heart attack claims Zaxby’s owner, community activist who touched lives
David Bowden, community activist and owner of four Zaxby’s restaurants across DeSoto County, was remembered Thursday for his energy and inspiring example of service and encouragement.
Bowden died of an apparent heart attack Wednesday in Athens, Ga., where he resided. He was 42.
“Dave Bowden changed my life,” said Donnie Chambliss of Southaven, a friend who also han- dled realty matters for the Zaxby’s operations. “He was a constant encourager, faithful servant and loyal friend. His impact will be felt for decades in North Mississippi. We will miss him greatly.”
Bowden was an active force in the area for years through involvement with Habitat for Humanity, DeSoto County Schools and various Chambers of Commerce.
Bowden recently opened his latest DeSoto restaurant on Getwell Road in Southaven, joining ones in Olive Branch, Horn Lake and Hernando. His franchise company also owns Zaxby’s restaurants in Batesville and Oxford and in Northwest Arkansas, 11 in all.
Last yea r Bowden moved back to his family home of Athens, but remained visible in the DeSoto area through his leadership in the Habitat for Humanity HomeRun 5K fund-raiser. He and his family lived in Midtown Memphis and Tupelo for several years prior to the move, but his business and heart were focused on DeSoto, said friends.

“Dave Bowden was an amazing man,” said William Stine, director of operations for Zaxby’s in North Mississippi. “Dave was more than an employer; he was a close friend of 15 years. Dave’s energy made a positive impact on everything he touched.”
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Athens, with Rev. Mark Harper and Rev. Beecher Matthes officiating. There will be a visitation and reception immediately following the service.
