Humane Society art shop and auction opens at Saddle Creek
Local artists offer works
Artist Betsy Bird said she tries to support the fundraising efforts of The Humane Society of Memphis and Shelby County every year with a painting of a rescue dog or one of the animals in residence there. This year, she painted her own dog, Callie, a rescued Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
The painting of Callie, titled “Please Take Me Home,” is one of the works by local artists for sale in the Paws for Art Pop-Up Shop and Art Auction to raise money for the organization that gives injured and abused dogs and cats a place to recover so they can be adopted.
“Because I want that dog to represent all the dogs that are at the Humane Society that need a home, on her tag it just says ‘adopt,’ ” Bird said.
The Paws for Art PopUp Shop is located at 2055 West Street, Suite 6, in The Shops of Saddle Creek March 1-12. Donated pieces of any medium from local artists are on display and many of the pieces are available for bidding on in a silent auction at the shop and online at memphishumane.org. The public can view the one- of-a-kind pieces and bid at the shop Monday-Friday, 4-8 p.m.; Saturday, noon to 8 p.m.; and Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.
A live auction and reception will be held March 14 at 7 p.m. at the shop. Tickets are $25 each and can be purchased online at memphishumane.org or at the door,.
“They’re all wonderful very involved artists and you can see their work all over the community,” said Leah Walker, development and marketing director for the Humane Society. “I’ve been very impressed with everything we’ve seen. I know it will help raise a lot of money for our cause.” Memphis artist Zoe Nadel is the honorary chair of the event.
Besides the pieces from local artists, there will be works created by some of the dogs and cats in residence at the Humane Society, located at 935 Farm Road.
The Humane Society’s funding comes exclusively from private donations. For more information, go to memphishumane.org or call 901-937-3900.
