Derby contender Vyjack wins Gotham

Vyjack remained unbeaten on his way to the Kentucky Derby, rallying for a two-length victory in the $400,000 Gotham Stakes for 3-year-olds on Saturday at Aqueduct.

The gelding trained by Rudy Rodriguez is now 4 for 4, all at Aqueduct. The Gotham victory was worth 50 qualifying points for the Derby.

“We thought maybe this horse could take us there,” Rodriguez said. “So far, he’s proven he belongs with this kind. Hopefully, he can keep going.”

COLLEGES

Host West Georgia scored two runs in the sixth inning to break open a tie game in a 5-3 win over Christian Brothers on a frigid day in the Gulf South Conference opener for both schools. The Bucs fell to 4-9, 0-1 GSC; the Wolves are 11-4, 1- 0.

FOOTBALL

The Dallas Cowboys have signed center Phil Costa to a two-year contract, pulling off another deal to save salary cap space. Costa’s agent, George Mavrikes, told The Associated Press that Costa’s $2.7 million, two-year deal includes a $450,000 signing bonus for $950,000 guaranteed. That will be a savings on the cap for the Cowboys since Costa could have made about $1.3 million as a free agent. Costa played in only three games last season. The move came only days after the Cowboys reworked the contracts of five starters, including DeMarcus Ware, Jason Witten and Miles Austin, to save cap space.

SOCCER

Ricardo Clark scored and helped create a D.C. United own goal to lead the host Houston Dynamo to a 2-0 victory Saturday. In a rematch of the 2012 MLS Eastern Conference championsh­ip, the Dynamo took a 1-0 lead on an own goal by United’s James Riley in the 80th minute. Off Brad Davis’ corner kick, Riley and Clark went up for the ball, with Riley heading it into the left net. Clark extended Houston’s lead to 2-0 in the 89th minute, taking a pass from Warren Creavalle outside the right 6-yard box and sending it high inside the far post.
