Prayer breakfast award renamed for Lipscomb
The annual DeSoto County Community Prayer Breakfast, which endows a scholarship, has a new name: the Cindy Lipscomb Scholarship, in tribute to one of the charter members of the sponsoring Prayer Council and co-founder of DeSoto Family Theatre.
For the past 14 years, funds from the breakfast have been designated for a $1,000 scholarship to a DeSoto senior in a public or private high school. The endowment is managed by the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi.
“Cindy had such a heart for young people and a passion for encourag- ing them to express their faith in God,” said Rev. Chip Hatcher, a council founder. “Each year this scholarship is awarded to a senior who expresses a compelling faith story. All of the candidates share the ways that their religious faith has made a difference in their lives.”
Lipscomb, 58, died last Aug. 31 of brain cancer.
Scholarship applications are available at each of the DeSoto public high schools and Southern Baptist Educational Center. It is also open to homeschooled seniors.
Applications can be obtained by calling the Community Foundation office at 662-449-5002, or by e-mailing Peggy Linton, community development director for the foundation, at plinton@cfnm.org. The deadline to apply for this year’s award is April 1, said Linton.
For more information on the foundation and its programs serving DeSoto and seven other counties — Coahoma, Marshall, Panola, Quitman, Tallahatchie, Tate and Tunica — go online at cfnm.org.
