Qualifier Gulbis wins Florida tourney

Qualifier Ernests Gulbis beat Edouard Roger-Vasselin 7- 6 (3), 6-3 on Sunday for his second title at the Delray Beach (Fla.) Internatio­nal Championsh­ips.

The 109th-ranked Gulbis, who also won this tournament in 2010, is the first qualifier to reach a final this season. The last qualifier to win an ATP World Tour title was Jarkko Nieminen of Finland at the 2012 Sydney tournament.

This also was the first time since 2007 in Houston that two players ranked outside of the top 100 reached the final. Then 108th-ranked Ivo Karlovic defeated then 156th-ranked Mariano Zabaleta in that final.

COLLEGES

The University of Memphis baseball team stranded seven runners in scoring position and two early errors proved costly as the Tigers dropped the series finale against Louisiana Monroe 5-3 at FedExPark Sunday. Bryce Beeler and Zach Willis paced the Memphis offense with two hits each and the Tigers out-hit ULM 9-8. Memphis starter Alex Gunn suffered the loss allowing three runs, all unearned.

The No. 22 University of Memphis women’s tennis team (7-3) defeated their fourth ranked opponent of the season with a 4-2 win over No. 44 Saint Mary’s at Arizona State’s Whiteman Tennis Center on Sunday afternoon in Tempe, Ariz. The Lady Tigers took a quick 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point for the first time in four matches. Stefanie Mikesz and Caroline Wegner cruised to an 8-2 win at No. 3 over Jade Frampton and Catherine Leduc while Tiffany Welcher and Alyssa Hibberd defeated No. 37 Catherine Isip and Elizabeth Searl, 8-4, at No. 2 to clinch the point for Memphis.

Jordan Richwood and Ellen Roberts combined to throw a one-hitter as the University of Memphis softball team shut out No. 20 Hawaii 5- 0 in the Bank of Hawaii Invitation­al in Honolulu. The win is the first for Memphis (7-10) against a ranked opponent since the Tigers defeated No. 16 Stanford on the road on Feb. 25, 2011.
