Miller pitches, hits Cards over D’ backs

ST. LOUIS — Shelby Miller hit his first career home run and also pitched six sharp innings, leading the St. Louis Cardinals over the Arizona Diamondbac­ks 12-8 Thursday night.

Matt Adams and Daniel Descalso homered in an eight-run fourth inning off Ian Kennedy. Matt Holliday and Matt Carpenter also connected for the Cardinals.

Miller (7-3) allowed two runs and six hits. Kennedy (3-4) was tagged for 10 runs in four innings.

Arizona scored three times in the ninth, and Edward Mujica got two outs for his 18th save.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Orioles 3, Astros 1 at Houston: J.J. Hardy got a season-high four hits and Adam Jones added an RBI double, leading Miguel Gonzalez and the Baltimore Orioles to a win over the Houston Astros on Thursday.

Gonzalez (3-2) yielded five hits and a run in six innings, and matched his season-best with seven strikeouts. He slowed down the Astros a day after they hit six home runs in an 11-7 win.

Tigers 5, Rays 2 at Detroit: Max Scherzer struck out nine in seven innings to remain unbeaten, and Victor Martinez homered and drove in three runs to lift the Detroit Tigers over the Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday.

Astros take Stanford pitcher with top pick: The Houston Astros made Stanford right- hander Mark Appel the No. 1 pick in the Major League Baseball draft Thursday.

With the No. 2 pick, the Chicago Cubs selected San Diego slugger Kris Bryant

Oklahoma right-hander Jonathan Gray went third overall to the Rockies.

The first high school player picked was pitcher Kohl Stewart, to the Minnesota Twins at No. 4.

In the second round, Kansas City selected Horn Lake native Cody Reed, a sophomore left-hander out of Northwest Mississipp­i Community College.

Cards Carpenter works from mound: Cardinals pitcher Chris Carpenter has thrown to hitters for the second time in four days as he tries to overcome a career-threatenin­g nerve issue.

The St. Louis righthande­r threw about 25 pitches to teammates Shane Robinson and Tony Cruz on Thursday. It was Carpenter’s fourth outing in a possible comeback.

Collins throws first pitch: Jason Collins, the first active athlete to come out as being gay in one of the four U. S. major profession­al sports leagues, threw out the ceremonial first pitch at Fenway Park on Thursday night before the Red Sox played the Texas Rangers. He has played for six NBA teams in 12 seasons.
