Six lanes of Poplar in East Memphis reopened Friday afternoon after a cut in a gas line caused them to shut down, according to Memphis Light, Gas and Water Division.

Glen Thomas, MLGW spokesman, said the lanes were reopened shortly after 3 p.m. after gas was shut off to service a damaged line.

The sewer department cut a 1-inch gas line at 4099 Poplar, prompting closing of all traffic lanes between Mendenhall and Truse Parkway.

Lt. Wayne Cooke, a spokesman for the Memphis Fire Department, said firefighters evacuated nearly 20 people from eight businesses in a strip mall..

“They were evacuated for precautionary reasons,” Cooke said.

No businesses lost gas service as a result of the cut line.
