Latos, Reds break skid vs. Cardinals

CINCINNATI — Mat Latos pitched seven solid innings and the Cincinnati Reds broke out of their slump with a 4-2 win over the St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday night.

Devin Mesoraco homered and drove in two runs and Jay Bruce also homered as the Reds snapped a three-game losing streak.

Latos (6- 0) allowed eight hits and two runs with no walks and five strikeouts against a Cardinals team that came in leading the National League in hitting.

“Against that lineup, any time you can hold them to two runs or less and not walk anybody is a good day,” Latos said. “That’s a great lineup. Not tough. Great.”

The Reds had lost five of their last six against St. Louis but scored four runs against Cardinals rookie left-hander Tyler Lyons. Lyons gave up six hits and a walk with two strikeouts in 5¥ innings.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Pirates 6, Cubs 2 at Chicago: A.J. Burnett (4- 6) pitched into the ninth and Pedro Alvarez and Russell Martin homered to lead Pittsburgh past the Cubs.

Burnett gave up four hits and three walks with five strikeouts in 8¥ innings to improve to 5-0 at Wrigley Field.

Brewers 4, Phillies 3 at Milwaukee: Jean Segura homered and Jonathan Lucroy hit a tiebreakin­g RBI double in the sixth inning, lifting the Brewers past Philadelph­ia.

Padres 4, Rockies 2 at Denver: Kyle Blanks hit a two-run homer and Eric Stults pitched seven solid innings, helping San Diego defeat Colorado.

Marlins 2, Mets 1 (20 innings) at New York: In the longest major league game in more than three years, Adeiny Hechavarri­a hit an RBI single in the 20th as Miami outlasted the Mets. Steve Cishek retired Daniel Murphy on a fly ball for the final out of a game that took six hours and 25 minutes.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Blue Jays 4, Rangers 3 (18 innings) at Toronto: Rajai Davis singled in the winning run in the 18th as the Blue Jays beat Texas in a game that matched the longest in club history for both teams.

Emilio Bonifacio hit a one- out single in the 18th and took third with two outs on a wild pickoff throw by Ross Wolf (11). Davis followed with a bouncing single down the third-base line.

Tigers 6, Indians 4 at Detroit: Prince Fielder hit a bases- clearing double in the second inning and the Tigers held on to beat Cleveland.

Yankees 3, Mariners 1 at Seattle: Andy Pettitte (5-3) allowed three hits over 7¥ innings to earn his 250th career victory, leading New York past the Mariners. Jayson Nix had a pair of RBI singles for the Yankees and Brett Gardner had three hits, including two doubles.

Angels 9-2, Red Sox 5-7 at Boston: David Ortiz rebounded from an 0-for-5 first game with a two-run homer and three RBIs to help Clay Buchholz improve to 9-0 as the Red Sox snapped their nine-game losing streak against Los Angeles.

In the first game, Mark Trumbo and Erick Aybar each drove in two runs for the Angels.

White Sox 4, Athletics 1 at Chicago: John Danks gave up three hits over eight innings, and the White Sox beat Oakland for their second win in 12 games.

Rays 8, Orioles 0 at St. Petersburg, Fla.: Jeremy Hellickson (4-2) pitched six scoreless innings and six different Tampa Bay players drove in runs to lead the Rays over Baltimore.

Royals 7, Astros 2 at Kansas City: Ervin Santana (45) pitched seven snappy innings and the Royals cruised past Houston. Santana allowed five hits in seven innings, striking out six without a walk.

INTERLEAGU­E

Twins 4, Nationals 3 (11 innings) at Washington: Ryan Doumit singled in the go-ahead run, and Joe Mauer homered, doubled and singled as Minnesota defeated the Nationals.
