American qualifier falls at Eastbourne

-

American qualifier Jamie Hampton’s remarkable run at Eastbourne ended in defeat Saturday against Elena Vesnina of Russia in the final of the Wimbledon warm-up.

Vesnina won in straight sets 6-2, 6-1 denying Hampton’s bid to become the first American woman to take the title since Chanda Rubin beat Conchita Martinez in 2003. Vesnina, who lost the first six finals of her career, has now won her last two after victory in Hobart in January.

The 41st-ranked Hampton was playing in her first career final after upsetting fourth-ranked Agnieszka Radwanska and ninth-ranked Caroline Wozniacki.

Elena Delle Donne had 13 points and Sylvia Fowles added 11 for the Sky (5-3). Prince shot 8 for 14 from the field. Shavonte Zellous scored 17 points to lead the defending champion Fever (1- 6), who were without perennial All-Star Tamika Catchings (back injury) as they lost their sixth straight.

Roneeka Hodges scored 19 points, Glory Johnson had 14 points and 12 rebounds, and the host Tulsa Shock beat the Seattle Storm 92-70 Saturday night for their most lopsided win in four seasons in Tulsa. SOCCER

Mike Magee had the winning goal and Joel Lindpere had two assists to help the visiting Chicago Fire rally in the second half for a 2-1 victory over the Columbus Crew. Lindpere found former Crew midfielder Dilly Duka at the far post for a right-footed stab that tied the game 1-1 in the 52nd minute. Two minutes later, Lindpere assisted on Magee’s 10th goal, sending a cross into the box that Magee chested into the goal.
