Patriotism Day puts Old Glory at center stage
On May 10 in Southaven, patriots from all over the county rallied around the tallest flag in the state of Mississippi and the Mid-South to show their patriotism.
Organizers Bill Witt, flag master for the DeSoto Patriots chapter of the Mississippi Society of the Sons of the American Revolution, and Matt McClain, event coordinator for the Landers Center, did an extraordinary job coordinating guests and logistics. The enormous flag, which measures 30 feet by 60 feet, was hoisted by military personnel from all branches during the presentation of the colors by Horn Lake High School’s Marine Jr. ROTC Color Guard.
Special guests included Kent Richey, chairman and CEO of the Landers Group and the flag’s benefactor, talked about his patriotic upbringing and that the American flags that fly over every one of the Landers dealerships.
Mark Gardner, DeSoto County supervisor, District 2 said the county was certainly very happy to be a participant in the celebration.
“We should take every opportunity to show our patriotism,” said Gardner. “And we thank the Landers Group for their generosity to the citizens — the flag is tremendous.”
The Marine Band Pipe and Drum Corps who, due to time restraints, had their program cut short, played “Amazing Grace,” but were able to sneak in one verse of the “Marine Hymn,” which brought all Marines to their feet. Everyone applauded.
Lee Caldwell, DeSoto County supervisor District 4 along with Gardner, read the official proclamation, “Patriotism Day — Rally Around the Flag” and members of the Sons of Confederate Veterans and Daughters of the American Revolution attended, both in period dress. The Memphis Detachment of the Marine Corp League presented a 21-gun salute.
Just watching that enormous flag and her handlers was a spectacle. As the audience pledged allegiance to the flag, the wind became the master and presented the flag in its full glory and splendor.
“The sharing of patriotism with fellow citizens, bonds a community, Caldwell said. “There were people from all walks of life at the ceremony. It was good to gather in one accord with everyone.”
