Why paddling is needed

- Roy Warmath, Munford, Tenn.

I disagree with Otis Sanford’s comments in his June 16 column “MCS got rule right on corporal punishment,” which contained his opinions on cellphones and corporal punishment in the new Shelby County consolidated schools.

He was critical of comments made by Joe Clayton, one of the members of the unified school board. Clayton supports having the ability to apply corporal punishment if and when needed. Sanford called Clayton’s position outlandish and went on to state that our schools aren’t to be treated as combat zones. Say what?

Does Sanford have his head stuck in the sand in an ostrich fashion? Has he not heard about students bringing guns and knives to schools? How about the gangs’ influence where initiation rites are carried out at some inner-city schools? How about the fights between students over trivial issues? Not to mention the lack of respect many students fail to show teachers and administrators.

I know Clayton has paid his dues as a lifelong educator who has been a teacher, coach, principal and administrator. He knows of what he speaks. Sanford reminds me of just another liberal who has an answer for everything based on no experience. Corporal punishment needs to be a deterrent available if and when needed. The Memphis City Schools are an excellent example of why this policy will be needed. sector unions or associations are not in the best interests of everyone involved.

Part of the budget discussions relates to raising the property taxes to give the sanitation workers a pension. These are a group of workers who deserve all the money we pay them, but let’s not forget their history. The sanitation workers at one point voted overwhelmingly for more money in their paychecks and to forgo a pension plan. Check the facts.

If they now want a pension, take that money back and put it in a pension plan. But remember this: Once a pension plan is instituted you can believe the city will, in the future, have to subsidize the fund to allow the older employees who are close to retirement to qualify for a pension. More tax dollars at work.
