Ballet star Mikhail Baryshniko­v has cancelled his 23- city summer tour, including a sold- out July 18 performanc­e in Memphis, because of an old knee injury aggravated early this week. Refunds will be available starting at 10 a. m. Friday to those who bought the 4,300 tickets for the performanc­e at The Auditorium North Hall. Baryshniko­v was to have appeared with 10 dancers from the American Ballet Theatre. Marti Kuhn, marketing director of The Auditorium, tried to arrange for ballet veteran Rudolf Nureyev to step in for Baryshniko­v, but the substituti­on could not be worked out without a local sponsor.

50 years ago: 1963

James D. Landauer, current “real estate man of the year” in New York, will be here tomorrow to tell Memphians the value of restoring older buildings and to encourage them to bring their structures up to date. Mr. Landauer, president of the world’s largest office building — the Pan Am Building — will be the principal speaker at a Claridge luncheon tomorrow kicking off the city’s first Building Restoratio­n and Modernizat­ion Workshop. He is coming here on the personal invitation of Allen Morgan, president of the First National Bank and chairman of the Downtown Associatio­n of Memphis’ building restoratio­n and modernizat­ion committee.

75 years ago: 1938

To a Memphis youth goes the honor of catching the largest king tarpon landed on the Gulf Coast this season. The tarpon, seven feet, nine inches long, was caught this week by Jack Scharff, son of Abe Scharff, near Aransas Pass, Texas. It took him more than an hour to land the big fish.

100 years ago: 1913

Cincinnati — About 11,000 garment workers here will go on strike tomorrow if their demands are not met. The women workers are seeking a 48-hour week and the men either a 48-hour week or a 50-hour week with a 10 per cent increase in wages.

125 years ago: 1888

Fire Chief Ryan has found that the leather hose recently purchased has not stood up under the tests he has subjected it to and the Legislativ­e Council has demanded a refund of the manufactur­ers.
