Honor city’s history
Patricia L. Kitts, Memphis
I have recently returned home to Memphis after visiting Vicksburg, Miss. I was most impressed with that city and noted the entire city is a shrine to all battles fought by men of all nationalities and all skin colors from both the North and the South in what is known as the Civil War, or the War Between the States.
Sadly, here in Memphis, where another tremendously brave battle was fought from the bluffs overlooking the mighty Mississippi, this entire war is being negated. Why? Are those who were involved with ideals, right or wrong, men, women and children, black and white, of all races and religions, no longer worthy of remembrance? How very sad.
I hope Mayor A C Wharton will think seriously of discontinuing changes that will remove signs of remembrance. This is our nation’s history; we cannot change it, but we can continue to learn from it and reassure ourselves that this war was fought so that all are recognized as equal, and we must live accordingly. As citizens of this lovely city, we cannot and should not erase these memories.
