Wimbledon shocker

Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine upset defending Wimbledon champion Roger Federer in their second-round match Wednesday.

HOUSTON — Erik Bedard pitched six effective innings and the Houston Astros used a four-run fourth inning to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-3 on Wednesday night.

Bedard (3-3) allowed seven hits and walked one, but he limited St. Louis to three runs. Three relievers combined to pitch two hitless innings before Jose Veras worked the ninth for his 16th save.

Veras yielded a one-out single to Jon Jay and then walked Matt Adams, but pinch hitter Daniel Descalso struck out and Matt Carpenter flied out to end the game.

Allen Craig homered for the second straight game and Yadier Molina had a two-run shot for the Cardinals, who lost for the fourth time in five games. They dropped into a tie with Pittsburgh for the lead in the NL Central.

Lance Lynn (10-2) gave up four runs on five hits in 7 2/3 innings.

Also Wednesday, the Cardinals activated righthande­r Fernando Salas (right shoulder) from the 15-day disabled list and optioned him to the Triple-A Redbirds.

INTERLEAGU­E

Athletics 5, Reds 0 at Oakland, Calif.: A.J. Griffin pitched a two-hitter for his first win in more than a month as the Athletics finished a two-game sweep of Cincinnati.

Griffin (6- 6) didn’t allow a hit until Devin Mesoraco’s one-out single in the fifth, and Xavier Paul added a two-out double in the seventh for the Reds.

Royals 4, Braves 3 (10 innings) at Kansas City: Alex Gordon drove in David Lough in the 10th, giving the Royals a victory over Atlanta.

Pirates 4, Mariners 2 at Seattle: Jordy Mercer hit a go-ahead single with two outs in the ninth as Pittsburgh beat the Mariners. The Pirates are 48-30, 18 games over . 500 for the first time since 1992, their last winning season.

Red Sox 5, Rockies 3 at Boston: John Lackey struck out a season-high 12 over seven strong innings, leading the Red Sox past Colorado. Colorado’s Michael Cuddyer extended his hitting streak to 23 games with two solo homers, matching Dante Bichette’s club-record set in 1995.

Marlins 5, Twins 3 at Miami: Placido Polanco homered for the first time in more than a year and Jeff Mathis also homered to help the Marlins overcome a three-run deficit and beat Minnesota.

Mets 3, White Sox 0 at Chicago: Shaun Marcum pitched eight shutout innings for his first win of the season to lead New York over the White Sox. Marcum (1-9) won for the first time since Oct. 1, 2012, while pitching for Milwaukee.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Cubs 5, Brewers 4 at Milwaukee: Scott Feldman pitched six solid innings, giving up three runs and six hits, as Chicago held on to beat the Brewers.

Nationals 3, Diamondbac­ks 2 at Washington: Jordan Zimmermann (11-3) dominated after giving up two runs in the first as the Nationals defeated Arizona. The NL West-leading Diamondbac­ks have lost three straight.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Blue Jays 3, Rays 0 at St. Petersburg, Fla.: R. A. Dickey (7-8) pitched a twohitter for his first complete game of the year, and Toronto beat Tampa Bay for its 12th win in 14 games. Dickey retired his first 13 batters.

Indians 4, Orioles 3 at Baltimore: Scott Kazmir took a no-hitter into the seventh, and Cleveland Indians scored two ninth-inning runs off Orioles closer Jim Johnson to win. A leadoff double in the seventh by Manny Machado was the only hit allowed by Kazmir, who gave up one unearned run in seven innings. He came out to the mound for the eighth but left with an apparent injury.

Angels 7, Tigers 4 at Detroit: Mike Trout homered and drove in three runs, and Erick Aybar’s tworun shot gave Los Angeles the lead for good over the Tigers.

Rangers 8, Yankees 5 at New York: Nelson Cruz homered and Texas got consecutiv­e two-run doubles from Adrian Beltre and A.J. Pierzynski in a victory over the Yankees.
