Swearing-in set for Tuesday

- Toni Lepeska

Olive Branch elected officials who will guide government the next four years will be sworn in at a public ceremony at 6 p.m. Tuesday before their first business meeting.

Anyone interested in the proceeding may attend the event at the new courthouse across from

City Hall. The Board of Aldermen meeting will follow at 6:30 p.m.

Scott Phillips, who resigned his position as assistant fire chief last week, came out ahead in a race of five candidates for the mayor’s job. Outgoing Mayor Sam Rikard’s term ends the last day of June.

Phillips will be sworn in privately before the public ceremony. Five aldermen will return for another four-year term while two will be new to the Board of Aldermen.

Salaries will be $104,041 annually for the office of mayor, and each alderman will get $17,686 annually. The salaries are several thousands of dollars less than prior years. Aldermen lowered the salaries in 2010 in reaction to the recession.
