New marshal in town
William Ernest Smith (left), a 37-year- old Selmer Republican, assumed the duties of United States marshal of West Tennessee after taking the oath of office from Federal Judge Marion S. Boyd (right) in June 1954. On hand was Ben I. King of Milan, a Democrat who had held the post for nine years.
