Mercury hold off Sun


Diana Taurasi and DeWanna Bonner scored 19 points each to lead the Phoenix Mercury in an 89-70 victory over the host Connecticu­t Sun on Saturday night.

Candice Dupree added 18 points and rookie Brittney Griner had nine points before fouling out as the Mercury (7-4) set a franchise record with their fifth straight road victory and completed a sweep of a three-game road trip for the first time in team history.

Penny Taylor, who missed more than a year with a knee injury, returned for the Mercury and scored eight points.

Tina Charles had 25 points and 11 rebounds to lead Connecticu­t (2-7), which lost its fourth straight.

Charles shot 3 for 18 from the floor, but was 19 for 24 on free throws, franchise records for both makes and attempts.

Allison Hightower added 13 points for the Sun, who trailed by double digits most of the second half and finished 27 percent (18 for 67) from the field.

Connecticu­t scored the last eight points of the first half and trailed 38-32 at halftime.
