White Station senior commits to Billikens

- By John Martin

One day after taking in the campus for a team camp, White Station rising senior guard Davell Roby committed to Saint Louis on Sunday evening.

“It was just a great opportunity and fit,” Roby said. “I can step in and play right away, and I’ve also got a good chance to get a scholarship academically. It was just a great fit.”

An athletic combo guard at 6-4, Roby is rated a three-star prospect by Rivals.com. He also considered Vanderbilt, UAB, Tennessee and Arkansas. He is the Billikens’ first verbal commitment in the 2014 class.

Roby said his first exposure to the Billikens’ program was during the 2012 NCAA Tournament, when Saint Louis knocked off the University of Memphis in the second round.

“Since then, I’ve just been keeping up with them and following them throughout the year,” Roby said. “They exploit mismatches during games and they’ll give you the rock. They allow freedom (offensively) and that’s what I was looking for.”

During the visit, Roby said he bonded with SLU coach Jim Crews and his assistants.

“We bonded, and I met a few players on the team,” Roby said. “Coach Crews showed me some game film, and I just felt like it was the spot for me to be.”

Roby will play with Team Penny on the July AAU circuit, beginning with the Peach Jam on July 10. He is the second 2014 Division 1 recruit from White Station to announce a decision, joining Florida pledge Chris Chiozza.
