Citizen service
Michael Gerson’s contention that mandatory service — military or civilian — would enhance true citizenship for America’s youth is compelling (June 26 Viewpoint column, “Service hones national character”).
Our overwhelming disconnect from the service of men and women who continue to fight for this country is a disgrace. These recent conflicts initiated by politicians with no military background and silently endorsed by an oblivious electorate are harmful to our future.
As a Vietnam veteran who served while questioning the rightness of the conflict, I earned the right to question our actions and gained the experience of service over self. The blessings of being an American are so much more poignant and permanent when we are vested in the process.
