Two Redbirds named to PCL All-star game

-

Pitcher Michael Wacha and first baseman Brock Peterson will represent the Redbirds and the Pacific Coast League in the Triple-A All-Star game.

The PCL All-Stars will take on their counterparts from the International League on July 17 in Reno, Nev. at Aces Ballpark.

Wacha, who turned 22 on Monday, is in his second professional season after being taken in the first round of the 2012 MLB draft by St. Louis. He went into Tuesday night’s game at Iowa with a 4-1 record and a 2.34 ERA. Earlier this season the righthander made his major league debut with the Cardinals.

Peterson signed as a free agent last August. He is batting . 311 and leads the PCL with 19 home runs. Peterson is also tied for the league lead with 41 extra-base hits.

On Tuesday night in Des Moines, Iowa, the Redbirds lost their fifth straight game with a 6-2 defeat to the division-leading Iowa Cubs at Principal Park. Nine of the Cubs’ 10 hits went for extra bases, including three triples that set a Redbirds single-game record.

Memphis dropped to 40-46 and four games behind Iowa in the PCL American Northern division. The Redbirds have lost nine of their last 10 road games.

Peterson hit his 20th home run and drove in both Redbirds runs in the loss. Second baseman Kolten Wong added his seventh triple of the season and scored a run.
