Southaven grad awarded Bluescope scholarship
The BlueScope Foundation recently announced that Southaven High School graduate and Class of 2013 valedictorian Rachel Cato has been awarded a $3,000 annual scholarship, beginning with the upcoming fall semester.
Cato competed against 58 other children of BlueScope employees for one of the 12 scholarships available this year. An independent committee of judges, who base their decisions on scholastic performance, character and future promise, select scholarship winners. The scholarship award will be maintained throughout four years if the student’s academic performance is maintained in the upper one-half of their class at an accredited college or university.
Cato is the daughter of Ron and Traci Cato. Ron Cato, a project manager, has worked for more than 13 years with Varco Pruden in Memphis.
Cato’s goal is to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering.
She plans to attend Mississippi State University in the fall.
The BlueScope Foundation was formed in 1952, formerly known as the Butler Manufacturing Company Foundation. Since its inception, the foundation has issued more than 400 scholarships. The BlueScope Foundation contributes f inancial assistance to community, education and cultural nonprofit organizations in the communities where facilities are operated. A seven-member board of trustees, comprised of active company employees, reviews and approves all applications and disbursements from the foundation’s headquarters in Kansas City, Mo.
