Don’t just read chemicals’ label directions — follow them
This is the time of year when homeowners and farmers will be spraying chemicals to kill weeds and insects on their plants.
When spraying herbicides and pesticides, there is always the chance for chemicals to drift into nontargeted areas and damage other crops.
Therefore, when using chemicals, it is very important to read and follow label directions.
The label will explain how to use the chemical correctly and what special safety measures should be taken.
It is illegal to use chemicals in any way that is not recommended by the label directions.
Here are some ways to reduce chemical drift and stay safe when using chemicals:
Don’t spray when the wind is higher than 4 or 5 mile per hour. This will help to reduce drift.
Wear protective clothing, including masks and goggles.
Mix and apply only the amount of chemicals you will need.
When you are spraying, know what other sensitive plants may be around, including vegetables, fruit trees and ornamental plants.
If you spray chemicals in a vegetable garden, know the waiting period before you can harvest that vegetable. This information should be on the label.
Store and dispose of chemicals properly. Always store chemicals in their original container.
