and the Miami Marlins rallied from 3-0 first-inning deficit to defeat the Atlanta Braves.
ATLANTA — Donovan Solano delivered a pinch-hit, go-ahead single off Braves closer Craig Kimbrel in the ninth inning, and the Miami Marlins beat Atlanta 4-3 on Thursday night.
The Marlins, who snapped a streak of eight straight losses to the Braves with Wednesday night’s 6-3 victory, won two of three in the series. Miami has won eight of its last 10 overall.
A.J. Ramos (3-2) allowed one hit with four strikeouts in two scoreless innings. Steve Cishek pitched the ninth for his 17th save.
Henderson Alvarez came off the 60-day disabled list for his Marlins debut and gave up hits to four of the first five batters.
Alvarez made a quick recovery to retire the next 11 batters, providing his teammates an opportunity to rally against Julio Teheran.
NATIONAL LEAGUE
Diamondbacks 5, Mets 4 (15 innings) in New York: Cliff Pennington hit an RBI single with two outs in the 15th inning and Arizona, boosted early by Gerardo Parra’s bunt double, outlasted New York in a game that lasted five hours, 46 minutes.
In a span of four days, the teams played a 13-inning game, a 15-inning marathon and two others delayed by rain for a total of three hours.
Nationals 8, Brewers 5 at Washington: Wilson Ramos hit a go-ahead, threerun homer in the seventh inning in his Fourth of July return to Washington’s lineup, leading a win over Milwaukee.
On a star-spangled day in the nation’s capital, the game featured a national anthem sung by Gen. Martin Dempsey, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and a new “Freedom Song” performed by Neil Diamond.
AMERICAN LEAGUE
Rays 7, Astros 5 (11 innings) at Houston: Yunel Escobar got three hits and drove in three runs, including a tiebreaking double in the 11th inning that sent Tampa Bay over Houston.
Brett Wallace homered twice for the Astros.
Jamey Wright (2- 1) pitched a scoreless 10th for the win and Fernando Rodney did the same in the 11th for his 18th save.
Yankees 9, Twins 5 at Minneapolis: Vernon Wells drove in three runs, and New York pounded rookie Kyle Gibson and Minnesota to finish a fourgame sweep.
The Yankees scored 29 runs in the series.
White Sox 3, Orioles 2 at Chicago: Adam Dunn hit a one-out home run in the bottom of the ninth inning off Tommy Hunter to give Chicago the victory over Baltimore.
Chicago starter Jose Quintana had a careerhigh 11 strikeouts and reliever Addison Reed (2-0) got the victory.
Royals 10, Indians 7 at Kansas City, Mo.: Lorenzo Cain hit his first career grand slam, Salvador Perez hit a bases-loaded double in the eighth inning and Kansas City rallied for a victory over Cleveland.
Tigers 11, Blue Jays 1 at Toronto: Justin Verlander pitched seven shutout innings, Austin Jackson hit a two-run homer and Detroit routed slumping Toronto.
Verlander (9-5), who won for the first time since June 7 at Cleveland, allowed three hits, all singles. It was his first start in Toronto since he pitched his second career no-hitter on May 7, 2011.
INTERLEAGUE
Athletics 1, Cubs 0 in Oakland: Derek Norris scored on a passed ball with two outs in the seventh inning and Oakland beat Chicago.
Dan Straily (5-2) gave up a hit over seven innings after being recalled from Triple-A Sacramento earlier in the day.
Red Sox 8, Padres 2 at Boston: Dustin Pedroia hit a two-run double, David Ortiz had a two-run single and Boston wrapped up a big homestand by beating San Diego, sending the Padres to their season-high sixth straight loss.
