“I was just a little bit off,” said the eighth-ranked American, who started off with a bogey for the second straight round but wowed the crowd with a lob shot onto the third green to set up one of his four birdies. “But I’m in a position where if I get a hot round, I can make up the ground.”

“I had no idea on these greens — I’m glad I’m leaving,” said Els, who said he still feels his game is in good shape heading to Muirfield.

John Deere Classic at Silvis, Ill.: Defending champion Zach Johnson, Lucas Glover and rookie Patrick Reed are tied for the lead following the second round.

Johnson shot a 5-under 66 to maintain a share of the lead for the second day in a row.

It “was a day of just hanging in there and letting things come. But I like the fact that I don’t have to be perfect and I can still play here,” Johnson said.

Reed shot a 63 in the morning session, one year after missing the cut at TPC Deere Run, and Glover finished at 9 under on Friday.

Australia’s Matt Jones is a shot back at 11 under.

U. S. Senior Open at Omaha, Neb.: Michael Allen shot a 7-under 63 and broke away from the pack for a five-stroke lead after the second round of the Champions Tour major.

Allen was among seven players who shared the first-round lead at 3 under. He birdied five of the first eight holes and eagled the par-5 14th while shooting his best round of the year in hot, breezy conditions at Omaha Country Club.

Allen’s 36-hole lead is the largest in the event’s 34-year history.

Rocco Mediate, at 5 under, is his closest pursuer.

Manulife Financial LPGA Classic at Waterloo, Ontario: Catriona Matthew shot a 64 to take a threestrok­e lead after the second round.

Matthew’s 15-under 127 at the tournament’s midway point blew away her previous career-best 36hole mark on tour by five strokes. American Angela Stanford shot a 67 and was second.

Utah Championsh­ip at Sandy: Chad Collins missed a chance for the fourth 59 in Web.com Tour history, parring the final six holes for an 11-under 60. Collins leads the tournament at 16 under. He had a 66 on Thursday.
