Davis hits his 35th homer in O’s victory

BALTIMORE — Chris Davis hit his 35th homer, Adam Jones and J.J. Hardy each had a three-run shot and the Baltimore Orioles beat Mark Buehrle and the Toronto Blue Jays 8-5 Friday night.

Davis upped his major league-leading home run total with a two-run drive in the second inning. Only Barry Bonds (39 in 2001), Mark McGwire (37 in 1998) and Reggie Jackson (37 in 1969) hit more homers before the All-Star break.

Jones connected in the third to put the Orioles up 5-3, and Hardy went deep in the sixth for a five-run cushion. All three home runs came off Buehrle, who had allowed only two long balls in his previous 11 starts.

Baltimore leads the majors with 128 home runs, including a combined 68 by Davis, Jones and Hardy.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Astros 2, Rays 1 at St. Petersburg, Fla.: Jarred Cosart took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of his major league debut, and Houston beat AL Cy Young Award winner David Price to end Tampa Bay’s season-best, eightgame winning streak.

Cosart (1-0) limited the Rays to a pair of walks before All-Star Ben Zobrist singled with one out in the seventh. Evan Longoria grounded into a double play to end the inning.

The 23-year-old righthande­r also yielded a single to James Loney in the eighth. The rookie threw 96 pitches, 54 for strikes.

Tigers 7, Rangers 2 at Detroit: Jhonny Peralta’s tworun double highlighte­d a five-run first inning for Detroit, which went on to beat Texas.

The Tigers scored four runs before making an out when their first six hitters reached base off Texas rookie Justin Grimm (7-7). Doug Fister (7-5) allowed two runs in the fourth but was otherwise sharp for Detroit.

Peralta, Prince Fielder, Austin Jackson and Torii Hunter had two hits apiece for the Tigers, and Victor Martinez extended his hitting streak to 14 games with an RBI double in the second that gave Detroit a 7- 0 lead.

Miguel Cabrera hit a sacrifice fly for his 95th RBI of the year.

Indians 3, Royals 0 at Cleveland: Corey Kluber pitched into the eighth inning and pinch hitter Michael Bourn had a big two-run single, leading Cleveland over Kansas City.

Kluber (7-5) allowed three hits and struck out eight in 7 ¦ innings.

Joe Smith recorded the final out in the eighth, and Cody Allen struck out Jarrod Dyson with the bases loaded for his second save.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Marlins 8, Nationals 3 at Miami: Marcell Ozuna drove in three runs, and Giancarlo Stanton homered for Miami, which dealt Stephen Strasburg the worst loss of his career in a win over Washington.

Strasburg (5-7) allowed a career-high seven earned runs and tied a career-high with four walks in two innings.

Nathan Eovaldi (2- 0) settled down after a rough first inning and held the Nationals without a run over the next five innings.

Pirates 3, Mets 2 (11 innings) at Pittsburgh: Jordy Mercer’s single up the middle off Germen Gonzalez drove home Andrew McCutchen with two outs in the 11th to lift Pittsburgh past New York.

Mets All-Star David Wright had two hits and extended his hitting streak to 12 games.

Gonzalez (0-1) got only two outs in his first inning in the majors and took the loss.

Reds 4, Braves 2 at Atlanta: Bronson Arroyo pitched seven sparkling innings, Brandon Phillips hit a two-run single in Cincinnati’s three-run first and the Reds beat Atlanta.

Arroyo (8-7) allowed three hits, including Brian McCann’s two- out solo homer in the seventh, and walked one. Sam LeCure pitched a perfect eighth and Aroldis Chapman gave up a run in the ninth before earning his 21st save.
