Electrolux on Friday delivered 200 window airconditioners to Neighborhood Christian Centers, which with Metropolitan Interfaith Association will distribute the 5,000-BTU units to needy residents of Shelby County.
The total value of the Frigidaire units is $30,000, said Electrolux Memphis spokeswoman Leigh Ann Berko.
Shelby County residents needing relief can contact the Neighborhood Christian Centers at 901-8816013 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The air- conditioners are made for Electrolux in China. The new Memphis plant is still ramping up to make ovens and ranges.
“We are committed to giving back to the communities in which we live and work,” said Jack Truong, chief executive officer of Electrolux Major Appliances North America. “Our products can help needy families and individuals who are suffering in the high heat and humidity.”
Said Kedra Jones, NCC compassionate ministries director: “We all know how hot it gets in Memphis during the summer months. Living on fixed incomes and being without what most people consider a basic necessity is the harsh reality for many people in this city, and NCC is dedicated to helping those in need.”
Applicants will need to provide a Tennessee state ID or driver’s license and most recent pay stub or SSI statement.
Households with seniors 60 and older and disabled residents without operable air conditioners will be given priority.
Other cities receiving donated AC units also are home to Electrolux operations: Charlotte, N.C., where Electrolux North America is headquartered; Springfield, Tenn., and Anderson, S.C.
The Swedish company also makes laundry, dishwasher, refrigerator and freezer products.
