Rangers beat Tigers, end Scherzer’s run

DETROIT — Max Scherzer’s unbeaten run ended Saturday night when the Texas Rangers tagged the Detroit All-Star with his first loss of the season, defeating the Tigers 7-1.

Scherzer (13-1) was trying to become the first pitcher in the majors to start 14-0 since Roger Clemens in 1986. He allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings, walking two and striking out six.

The loss was Scherzer’s first in the regular season since Sept. 23, a span of 21 starts.

Mitch Moreland’s tworun homer in the fourth gave Texas a 3- 0 lead. Adrian Beltre hit a tworun homer in a three-run ninth for Texas.

Texas’ Derek Holland (8- 4) allowed a run and five hits in seven innings.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

Blue Jays 7, Orioles 3 at Baltimore: J.P. Arencibia put Toronto ahead with a two-run single in the sixth, and the Blue Jays overcame home runs by Chris Davis and Adam Jones to beat the Orioles.

Davis increased his major- league leading home run total to 36 with his third homer in three games, a solo shot in the second inning. Reggie Jackson is the only player in AL history with more home runs before the AllStar break; he hit 37 in 1969.

Twins 4, Yankees 1 at New York: Trevor Plouffe, Ryan Doumit and Pedro Florimon homered for Minnesota against Phil Hughes as the Twins snapped a six-game losing streak with their second victory in 14 games, winning for the first time in six meetings with the Yankees this year.

Rays 4, Astros 3 at St. Petersburg, Fla.: Luke Scott had a go-ahead RBI single in the sixth after he tied it with a two-run homer in the fifth, leading Tampa Bay over Houston.

Indians 5, Royals 3 at Cleveland: Lonnie Chisenhall hit his first career grand slam as the Indians beat Kansas City.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

Pirates 4, Mets 2 at Pittsburgh: Andrew McCutch- en hit a tying home run, then a go-ahead single the next inning as the Pirates rallied past New York for their third straight win.

McCutchen’s 10th homer this season made it 2-2 in the sixth. He added an RBI single in the seventh off Greg Burke (0-2).

Justin Wilson (6- 1) earned the victory in relief of starter A.J. Burnett. All-Star closer Jason Grilli worked a perfect ninth for his NL-leading 29th save. The victory assured Pittsburgh (56-36) of its best record at the All-Star break since 1975.

Braves 5, Reds 2 at Atlanta: Mike Minor struggled early before recovering to throw seven strong innings, and also hit a goahead double that led the Braves over Cincinnati.

Minor (9- 4) snapped a streak of five straight starts without a win. The left-hander allowed two runs on six hits and one walk. Minor’s two-run double in the fifth gave the Braves a 3-2 lead.

Dodgers 1, Rockies 0 at Los Angeles: Zack Greinke retired his first 13 Colorado batters before finishing with a two-hitter for a win in his fifth straight start. Greinke (8-2) struck out nine, walked one and got 14 ground-ball outs while getting his fourth shutout and 13th complete game in 245 career starts.

Marlins 2, Nationals 1 (10 innings) at Miami: Giancarlo Stanton homered leading off the ninth to tie it and Ed Lucas beat out a double-play relay in the 10th to lift the Marlins over Washington.

INTERLEAGU­E

White Sox 5, Phillies 4 (11 innings) at Philadelph­ia: Alexei Ramirez hit a tiebreakin­g double in the 11th to lift Chicago in the opener of a day-night doublehead­er.

After a 41-minute rain delay following the top of the ninth, White Sox righty Nate Jones escaped a no-out, second-and-third situation. Alejandro De Aza hit a two-out triple off J.C. Ramirez (0-1) in the 11th and Ramirez followed with a liner to right-center for his fourth hit. Ramirez scored when shortstop Jimmy Rollins booted Alex Rios’ grounder for an error.
